Honesty and empathy:

The keys to a successful career

Marc has been with MBS Logistics in air freight imports since 2019. In 2023, he expanded his role by contributing his experience and passion as a trainer for the company’s commercial apprentices. Together with his colleague Max, Marc supports the development of aspiring freight forwarders. “I’m not just a trainer – I’m also a mentor, organiser, and the first point of contact for any questions or concerns our apprentices might have,” he explains.

Marc’s responsibilities are diverse, including recruiting, conducting interviews, and onboarding new apprentices. He ensures that trainees rotate through various departments, gaining practical insights along the way. “It’s essential to me that apprentices always receive support when they face challenges,” Marc stresses.

At present, Marc manages ten apprentices. On average, MBS Logistics trains between ten and fourteen apprentices per year in Germany. One of the key challenges he identifies in his role is keeping the apprentices motivated. “It can be tough to get across how important it is to take their training seriously. We still operate in a performance-driven society, after all. But there are also many apprentices who are highly motivated and eager to contribute – I particularly enjoy supporting them.”

When an apprentice encounters difficulties, Marc favours a straightforward and honest approach. “I address problems openly and make it clear that constructive feedback is intended to help them improve. It’s also crucial for me to be empathetic and understand their perspective.”

Honesty and openness are central to Marc’s approach. “I’m convinced that genuine change is only possible through open communication,” he says. He maintains fairness and objectivity, while keeping the company’s interests in mind.

Marc holds feedback sessions with the apprentices once or twice a year to discuss their current progress and future aspirations. “This helps me identify early on who might be interested in staying with MBS, and what opportunities for permanent roles might be available,” Marc explains.

Marc’s journey into logistics was somewhat unplanned. “I always knew I wanted to work in a commercial role, and through various contacts, I eventually found my way into freight forwarding.” Since completing his apprenticeship near Cologne, he has been fascinated by the logistics industry. “You work with people from all over the world, and so much relies on efficient supply chains – across every sector of society. It’s incredibly engaging.”

For those considering a career in logistics, Marc has clear advice: “Logistics is a future-proof industry with plenty of opportunities for growth. If you enjoy organising and are flexible, logistics is the right place for you. Of course, resilience is important too, as there’s always plenty going on.”

Marc also recommends MBS Logistics as an employer, not least due to its attractive work environment: “Flat hierarchies, quick decision-making, and additional benefits beyond salary make it a rewarding place to work. Those willing to invest effort will find great career prospects at MBS.”
