From Ningbo to Frankfurt

When Shanshan arrived at MBS Logistics Frankfurt for the first day of her forwarding agent apprenticeship, she was nervous. Originally from Ningbo, China, Shanshan had logistics experience but faced new challenges in Germany: a different language, new logistics areas and unfamiliar protocols. The MBS Frankfurt team supported her every step of the way.

The forwarding agent apprenticeship at MBS Logistics equips participants to plan and manage global goods transportation. Apprentices gain hands-on experience in shipping processes, customs regulations, customer communications as well as other procedures required to ensure timely and reliable deliveries.

A personalised approach to development

The MBS Frankfurt office specialises in sea and air freight imports and exports, offering apprentices the opportunity to learn in these areas. For international apprentices like Shanshan, the apprenticeship programme also includes German language courses.

The programme is tailored to each individual’s needs and progress. Apprentices rotate through departments to gain the necessary skills and knowledge. While the apprenticeship typically lasts three years, it can be completed earlier based on progress and prior experience.

“At first, I focused on sea freight imports,” explains Shanshan. “This was a new area for me, especially learning in German. Now, I’ve moved to sea freight exports. My experience in China helped me adapt quickly, and within a month, I could handle tasks independently. I like this personal approach to my development.”

Regardless of the area, Shanshan emphasises the work demands prioritisation, ability to work under pressure and a customer focus. “Today, for example, we only had a few hours to plan a customer’s shipment or there would be costly delays.”

The power of good mentorship

One of the most meaningful aspects of the apprenticeship for Shanshan is the relationships she has built. She credits her progress to the guidance from her supervisors and colleagues.

“My boss and team encourage me to grow,” says Shanshan. “Initially, I was scared to speak with customers on the phone in German. But my boss was very supportive, pushing me and assisting me. This boosted my confidence.”

“The people at MBS are patient,” she adds. “Everyone takes time to answer my questions.”

A bright future

When thinking about the future, Shanshan is excited to apply her skills and proud of her perseverance. “I like working in Germany. Coming from China, there are challenges, but MBS is a supportive company. They respect people from other countries,” expresses Shanshan.

When asked what she would tell new apprentices, Shanshan advises: “Don’t be afraid to ask for help or share your opinion. The people around you are there to support and want you to succeed.”
