Baby Heart Valves
Challenge
A high-stakes situation arose when an infant patient in a Madrid hospital was primed for a crucial surgery, but the essential heart valve needed for the operation was missing. Despite having arrived at Frankfurt Airport earlier that day, the life-critical item failed to make its connecting flight to Madrid. Efforts to reschedule its delivery failed, putting the young patient’s life at serious risk.
Solution
In the face of this critical situation, the customer turned to the MBS Anytime emergency response team for help. Given that passengers and their luggage are prioritized over cargo in air transport, Anytime swiftly coordinated an on-board courier (OBC) service. The courier was sent to Rhein-Main Airport and booked onto the next flight from Frankfurt am Main to Madrid, securely carrying the essential heart valve in his carry-on luggage. Upon arrival, the courier wasted no time, promptly taking a taxi from the airport straight to the hospital. With the small yet life-saving package in tow, he arrived at the facility on schedule at 11 PM – right in time for the operation.
Result
The surgery proceeded overnight as planned. The next morning, the doctor personally called the Anytime team in Cologne to express his gratitude for their quick and innovative solution. He shared the good news that the baby was doing well, which was the most rewarding feedback for everyone involved.
