Ensuring tamper-evident packaging for air freight
Safety is paramount in air freight, as is the timely and reliable delivery of your shipments. A crucial factor in achieving this is tamper-evident packaging. We’d like to take this opportunity to remind you of the importance of adhering to these standards to ensure the secure transport of your air freight.
Why is this important?
In accordance with section 6.6.1.1 sentence 1(a) of the Annex to Regulation (EU) 2015/1998, known consignors and regulated agents are required to ensure that shipments remain tamper-proof after security checks and throughout transport in non-secure areas. You can find the full text from the German Federal Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt) [here].
A shipment is considered tamper-evident if:
- Unauthorised items cannot be introduced, or
- Any tampering is immediately visible.
How to comply with these requirements:
- Sealed packaging: Avoid openings that could allow unnoticed interference. If unavoidable (e.g., due to specific cargo types), minimise openings to eliminate the possibility of tampering.
- Appropriate sealing materials: Use items such as company-branded or security adhesive tape, strapping bands, seals, or tamper-evident tags.
- Durable outer packaging: Opt for robust materials like cartons, drums, or wooden crates.
- Minimisation of voids: Ensure consolidated shipments do not contain empty spaces that could allow unauthorised items to be inserted. If voids are unavoidable (e.g., in drums), they must remain fully visible.
Important to note:
Even within the secure supply chain, tamper-evident packaging is a legal requirement. It serves as an additional layer of protection, complementing access control measures.
Our responsibility as your logistics partner:
At MBS Logistics, we are committed to checking all shipments for tamper-evident packaging upon receipt. If this requirement is not met:
- We cannot accept the shipment as “secure.”
- We must perform an additional security check and repackage the shipment in a tamper-proof manner.
- In rare cases, we may need to reject the shipment.
These measures could lead to delays and, potentially, additional costs – which we are committed to helping you avoid.
Thank you for supporting these regulations. Together, we can ensure that your air freight is not only safe but also delivered reliably to its destination.
If you have any questions, our team is always here to assist you.
